Moonglow Juniper Tree

Moonglow Juniper Tree – The Most Striking Silvery-Blue Evergreen You Can Grow

Few evergreens command attention quite like the Moonglow Juniper. With its intensely silvery-blue foliage — among the most vivid blue coloring of any juniper variety — Moonglow is a true four-season landscape specimen that draws the eye and holds it year-round. Whether planted as a standalone focal point, used to frame an entryway, or incorporated into a mixed evergreen border, its luminous silver-blue color provides a dramatic contrast against green foliage, dark structures, and winter snow alike.

Cold-hardy to Zone 3, drought-tolerant, and naturally upright with minimal maintenance required, Moonglow is as tough as it is beautiful. Available in 3 Gallon through 4–5 ft. sizes.

Why You’ll Love the Moonglow Juniper

  • Exceptional Silvery-Blue Color: Among the most intensely blue-silver foliage of any juniper variety — a luminous, shimmering color that holds beautifully through all four seasons, including winter
  • Outstanding Cold Hardiness: Hardy to Zone 3 — one of the most cold-tolerant ornamental junipers available, thriving in the harshest northern winters
  • Exceptional Drought Tolerance: Once established, highly drought-tolerant — thrives with minimal supplemental watering in most climates
  • Naturally Upright Form: Dense, broadly columnar habit reaching 15–20 ft. tall and 6–8 ft. wide — a substantial, architectural presence without requiring shearing
  • Ornamental Berries: Produces attractive silvery-blue berries that persist through winter, adding ornamental interest and providing food for birds
  • Wildlife-Friendly: Dense branching provides critical nesting and winter shelter for birds; berries attract a wide range of wildlife
  • Adaptable to Poor Soils: Thrives in rocky, sandy, clay, and alkaline soils where most ornamental trees struggle
  • Low Maintenance: Once established, requires virtually no care — no irrigation, no fertilization, no pruning needed to maintain its natural form

Landscape Uses

Moonglow Juniper excels in multiple landscape roles. As a specimen tree, its silvery-blue color makes it a natural focal point in any garden composition. As an entryway accent, a matched pair flanking a gate or doorway creates a dramatic, formal statement. In a mixed evergreen border, its blue-silver color provides striking contrast against green arborvitae, dark conifers, and deciduous shrubs. In containers, it thrives in large planters on patios and terraces where its color can be fully appreciated up close.

Growing Zones & Care Guide

  • USDA Hardiness Zones: Zones 3–8. Moonglow Juniper is one of the most cold-hardy and widely adaptable ornamental junipers available — thriving across an enormous range of climates from the coldest northern gardens to warm southern landscapes.
  • Sunlight: Full sun — 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for best color intensity, density, and form. The silvery-blue foliage color is most vivid in full sun. Tolerates partial shade but with reduced color intensity and a looser form.
  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, highly drought-tolerant — requires little to no supplemental irrigation in most climates. Overwatering is the most common cause of juniper decline; allow soil to dry between waterings.
  • Soil: Exceptionally adaptable — rocky, sandy, clay, loamy, and alkaline soils are all tolerated as long as drainage is adequate. Avoid waterlogged or permanently wet sites.
  • Fertilizing: Rarely needed. A light application of balanced fertilizer in early spring can support establishment in very poor soils. Established trees in average soils require no fertilization.
  • Pruning: Minimal pruning needed — the natural upright form is self-maintaining. Remove any dead or damaged branches in late winter if desired. Avoid heavy shearing, which removes the berry-producing tips and disrupts the natural form.
  • Color Note: Moonglow’s silvery-blue foliage color is most intense in full sun and during the cooler months of fall and winter. In summer, the color may appear slightly greener — this is normal and the blue-silver intensifies again as temperatures cool.
  • Mature Size: 15–20 ft. tall, 6–8 ft. wide — a substantial, broadly columnar form that makes a commanding landscape presence.
