Tangerine Beauty Crossvine

The Native Hummingbird Vine That Won’t Take Over Your Garden

Tangerine Beauty Crossvine (Bignonia capreolata 'Tangerine Beauty') is one of the most spectacular flowering vines native to North America — and one of the most underused. Its large, trumpet-shaped flowers in vivid tangerine-orange with yellow throats are irresistible to hummingbirds, which visit repeatedly throughout the bloom season. It blooms prolifically in spring and early summer, covering the entire vine in a breathtaking display of color, then reblooms sporadically through summer and fall. Unlike its cousin the trumpet vine (Campsis radicans), which is notoriously invasive and difficult to control, Crossvine is a well-mannered, non-invasive native that stays where you plant it. It is semi-evergreen to evergreen in mild climates, providing year-round foliage coverage on fences, trellises, and walls.

Why Tangerine Beauty Stands Out

  • Native North American speciesBignonia capreolata is native to the southeastern US; non-invasive and ecologically responsible; supports native wildlife
  • Exceptional hummingbird attraction — large, trumpet-shaped flowers are perfectly designed for hummingbirds; one of the most effective hummingbird-attracting vines available
  • Vivid tangerine-orange blooms — large, showy trumpet flowers in vivid orange-red with yellow throats; one of the most colorful flowering vines available
  • Non-invasive — unlike trumpet vine — does not spread aggressively by runners or self-seeding like Campsis radicans; stays in bounds without aggressive management
  • Semi-evergreen to evergreen — retains foliage year-round in zones 7–11; semi-evergreen in zones 5–6; provides year-round coverage on structures
  • Fast-growing privacy screen — vigorous grower that quickly covers fences, trellises, walls, and pergolas with dense, attractive foliage
  • Exceptionally cold-hardy for a tropical-looking vine — hardy to zone 5; far more cold-tolerant than most vines with similar flower size and color

Hardiness & Growing Zones

  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 5–9
  • Zones 5–6: Hardy in-ground; semi-evergreen; may lose most foliage in severe winters but regrows vigorously in spring; blooms reliably each year
  • Zones 7–8: Ideal conditions; semi-evergreen to evergreen; vigorous growth with prolific spring blooming and sporadic rebloom through summer and fall
  • Zone 9: Fully evergreen; thrives in heat; may bloom earlier (late winter–early spring) and continue longer into fall
  • Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade (full sun produces the most prolific blooming; tolerates partial shade better than most flowering vines)
  • Soil: Adaptable to most well-drained soils; tolerates clay, loam, and sandy conditions; moderately drought-tolerant once established
  • Mature size: 30–50 ft if unpruned; easily maintained at 10–20 ft with annual pruning
  • Bloom time: Spring to early summer (April–June) with sporadic rebloom through fall

Planting & Care Tips

Plant near a sturdy support structure — Crossvine climbs by tendrils with adhesive discs and can attach directly to walls, fences, and masonry without additional support. Full sun produces the most flowers. Water consistently during the first growing season; once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant. Fertilize lightly in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer. Prune after the main spring bloom flush to shape and control size; remove dead or crossing canes in late winter. Unlike trumpet vine, Crossvine does not require aggressive root management to keep it in bounds.

Available Sizes

  • 1 Gallon — young, well-rooted vine; most economical; ideal for planting in multiples along a fence
  • 3 Gallon — larger, more established vine; faster to first full bloom display
  • 5 Gallon — most established; may bloom in the first season after planting
