Sweetheart Blueberry Bush – Early-Season Sweet Berries

Sweetheart Blueberry: Early Berries with Bonus-Fruit Potential

Sweetheart Blueberry brings sweet flavor and firm, medium to medium-large berries to the home garden. This northern/southern highbush hybrid is valued for its early, concentrated main harvest and may offer a little additional fruit later when conditions are favorable.

Imagine picking a handful for breakfast, folding fresh berries into muffins, or freezing part of your harvest for later. Spring flowers and colorful autumn foliage add seasonal interest alongside its edible appeal.

Why Choose Sweetheart?

  • Sweet, firm berries: Enjoy fresh, baked, frozen, or made into preserves.
  • Early main crop: Harvest timing varies by region and season rather than following one nationwide date.
  • Possible late-season bonus: The USDA breeder notes that mild autumn conditions may encourage reflowering and a small amount of additional fruit.
  • Self-pollinating: One bush can bear fruit, although a different compatible blueberry variety with overlapping bloom can help improve pollination.
  • Edible-landscape interest: Flowers, berries, and fall foliage provide changing seasonal appeal.

Growing Zones, Chilling & Mature Size

  • USDA zones: 4–8, following University of Maryland Extension guidance. Early USDA reporting described zone 5 hardiness with colder-zone performance still under study; use local guidance in exposed zone 4 sites.
  • Chilling reference: Approximately 750–800 chill hours, as listed by UC Master Gardeners. Winter chilling matters in addition to hardiness zone; this is not a low-chill recommendation for every warm climate.
  • Planning size: Approximately 5–6 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide, with variation from climate, age, and pruning.

Soil, Light & Water

  • Acidic soil: Aim for a soil pH of approximately 4.5–5.5. Test before planting rather than assuming ordinary garden soil is suitable.
  • Drainage: Use well-drained soil with appropriate organic matter; avoid standing water around roots.
  • Light: Choose a sunny site for fruit production.
  • Moisture: Monitor regularly and keep moisture reasonably consistent without waterlogging, especially while establishing and during fruit development.

Available Size & Pack Options

Offered in a 2 Gallon nursery size, with Single or 2-Pack choices. Nursery size is not a guaranteed delivery height or indication that the plant will fruit immediately. Two Sweetheart plants are the same variety; a 2-Pack is not a mixed-variety pollination pairing.

Realistic Harvest & Container Expectations

A second harvest is not guaranteed. USDA describes late-season refruiting as a small treat rather than a full second crop, and University of Maryland reports only a spring crop at its Wye research site. Main-crop yield and any bonus berries depend on maturity, weather, pollination, and care. Do not expect a fixed annual weight or a first-season crop.

For container growing, provide ample root space, drainage holes, and an acidic growing mix suitable for blueberries. Containers require closer watering attention, periodic repotting, and winter root protection in colder climates. Prune as needed for plant health and productive growth rather than repeatedly shearing into a tight shape.

Choose Sweetheart Blueberry for an early-season berry project in a garden with suitable winter chilling, acidic soil, and room to grow.
