Sprinter® Boxwood – Compact Evergreen for Low Hedges

Sprinter® Boxwood: Compact Evergreen Structure for Hedges & Borders

Sprinter® Boxwood (Buxus microphylla ‘Bulthouse’) brings a tidy evergreen outline to low hedges, foundation beds, and formal borders. Selected as an improved version of Winter Gem, it offers faster growth than many traditional boxwoods while retaining the compact scale that makes these shrubs useful around the home.

Picture a green border outlining your front walk or a pair of evergreen accents framing a patio. Sprinter® provides structure beyond the flowering season, with a natural form that can be left relaxed or lightly shaped for a more formal look.

Why Choose Sprinter®?

  • Evergreen foliage: Adds year-round structure to mixed plantings.
  • Compact size: Useful for low hedges, edging, and smaller foundation beds.
  • Relatively faster growth: An advantage over many traditional boxwoods, not a promise of an instant hedge or a fixed annual growth rate.
  • Flexible light exposure: Suitable for sun, part sun, or shade with appropriate site care.
  • Deer resistance: Described by the breeder as deer resistant, not deer-proof.

Growing Zones & Mature Size

  • USDA zones: 5–9, following Proven Winners ColorChoice's cultivar-specific guidance.
  • Mature size: Approximately 2–4 feet tall and wide, depending on conditions, age, and pruning.
  • Landscape fit: Best suited to low borders and hedges rather than tall privacy screening. Allow room for mature width and air circulation.

Light, Soil & Water

  • Light: Sun to shade. A sheltered site with protection from harsh afternoon sun is helpful in hot locations; deeper shade can produce a more open habit.
  • Soil: Moist, well-drained soil. Avoid persistently wet roots and low spots where runoff collects.
  • Water: Check soil moisture regularly during establishment and water as needed. Adjust to weather and soil rather than a fixed schedule.
  • Site protection: Shelter from drying winds helps reduce stress on evergreen foliage.

Available Nursery Sizes

Choose 1 Gallon or 3 Gallon. These labels describe offered nursery-container sizes, not mature dimensions or guaranteed delivery heights. Hedge fill-in time depends on starting size, spacing, growing conditions, and care.

Pruning & Ongoing Care

Pruning is seldom needed for the natural form. Proven Winners notes that light trimming may be done in summer when shaping is desired. A precisely clipped hedge will still need maintenance; faster growth does not mean a permanent manicured outline without trimming.

If feeding is needed, follow label directions for an appropriate controlled-release fertilizer in spring. Monitor plant health and provide suitable drainage and spacing rather than interpreting disease resistance as immunity.

For containers, provide drainage holes, room for roots, closer moisture monitoring, and periodic repotting. Protect container roots during cold winters; an in-ground zone rating does not guarantee survival in an exposed pot.

Choose Sprinter® Boxwood for a compact evergreen framework that suits your garden's light, drainage, and desired maintenance level.
