Scentsation Honeysuckle (Lonicera periclymenum 'Scentsation') delivers everything that makes honeysuckle one of the most beloved garden vines — the intoxicating sweet fragrance, the cheerful yellow-and-white tubular flowers, the hummingbird and butterfly traffic — without the invasive behavior that has made Japanese honeysuckle (L. japonica) a serious ecological problem across much of the US. Scentsation is a European woodbine honeysuckle, a well-mannered, non-invasive species that stays where you plant it. It has been specifically selected for exceptional fragrance — widely considered the most intensely scented honeysuckle variety available — and for prolific, continuous blooming from late spring through summer. Its red berries in fall add a third season of ornamental interest and provide food for birds.
Plant near a sturdy support structure. Full sun produces the most flowers and the strongest fragrance. Water consistently during the first growing season; once established, Scentsation is moderately drought-tolerant. Fertilize lightly in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer. Prune after the main bloom flush in midsummer to shape and encourage a second flush of blooms; remove dead or crossing canes in late winter. Unlike Japanese honeysuckle, Scentsation does not require aggressive management to keep it in bounds.
