Red Balloon® Viburnum: Spring Flowers & Brilliant Red Berries
Red Balloon® Viburnum (Viburnum × rhytidophylloides) brings multi-season interest to mixed borders, screening plantings, and larger foundation beds. Lacy white flower clusters appear in spring, followed by green fruit that turns brilliant red in late summer. Thick, leathery foliage adds a bold texture through the growing season.
Picture white blooms brightening the back of your border, then clusters of red fruit providing a fresh focal point as summer winds down. Give this broad shrub room to grow and it can become a substantial part of your landscape rather than a small accent squeezed beside a doorway.
Why Choose Red Balloon®?
-
Spring flowers: Large white clusters provide a showy seasonal display.
-
Late-summer fruit: Green fruit develops red color; berry abundance depends on pollination and growing conditions.
-
Bold foliage: Thick, leathery leaves contrast with finer-textured plants.
-
Screening potential: Its mature size suits grouped plantings and substantial mixed borders.
-
Flexible exposure: Grows in sun or part sun.
-
Deer resistance: Described as deer resistant by the breeder, not deer-proof.
Growing Zones & Mature Size
-
USDA zones: 4–8, following Proven Winners' cultivar-specific guidance.
-
Mature size: Approximately 6–8 feet tall and wide, depending on conditions and care.
-
Placement: Allow room for the full spread near paths, buildings, and neighboring plants. This is not a dwarf shrub or a promise of year-round privacy.
Pollination & Berry Expectations
Red Balloon® can develop some fruit without another variety nearby. For a heavier berry display, Proven Winners recommends planting near ‘Mohican’ or ‘Alleghany’ viburnum. A compatible variety flowering at the same time is more useful for this purpose than another identical Red Balloon® plant.
Fruit quantity and timing vary with plant maturity, bloom overlap, weather, and care. Do not expect an equally heavy display every year or berries on a newly delivered plant. The berries are ornamental and are not sold as an edible crop.
Light, Soil & Water
-
Light: Part sun to full sun, approximately 4 or more hours of direct sunlight daily.
-
Soil: Moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil is preferred. Avoid persistently waterlogged sites.
-
Water: Provide average moisture and monitor regularly during establishment. Adjust watering to rainfall, soil conditions, and heat rather than a fixed schedule.
Available Nursery Sizes
Choose 1 Gallon or 3 Gallon. Nursery-size labels describe the offered container sizes, not mature dimensions or guaranteed delivery heights. Flower and fruit presence at delivery depends on season and plant development.
Pruning & Container Planning
Red Balloon® flowers on old wood. If shaping is needed, prune after spring flowering rather than before it, and remember that removing flowering stems can reduce the fruit display. Place it where its natural size fits to limit repeated pruning.
A young plant may be displayed in a large container, but its substantial mature size makes an in-ground landscape site the simpler long-term choice. Containers require drainage, closer moisture monitoring, room for root growth, and winter root protection in colder climates.
Choose Red Balloon® Viburnum for spring bloom, late-summer berry color, and bold structure in a garden with room for a full-sized shrub.
