Purple Pillar® Rose of Sharon: Upright Form & Purple Summer Flowers
Purple Pillar® Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus ‘Gandini Santiago’) brings vertical impact to sunny borders and seasonal screens. Its naturally columnar habit offers a narrower footprint than spreading rose of Sharon varieties, while large, semi-double purple flowers add color from summer into fall.
Imagine a line of upright flowering shrubs defining a garden space, or one tall accent drawing the eye above lower perennials. Purple Pillar® makes height its strength, but still needs room for its mature spread and a site suited to a substantial shrub.
Why Choose Purple Pillar®?
-
Naturally narrow growth: Adds vertical structure without the broad outline of many traditional rose of Sharon shrubs.
-
Ruffled purple blooms: Large, semi-double flowers bring warm-season color.
-
Seasonal screening: Useful in hedges and grouped plantings where summer foliage is welcome.
-
Limited shaping needs: Its natural form generally requires little to no pruning.
-
Pollinator interest: Flowers attract visiting pollinators.
Growing Zones & Mature Size
-
USDA zones: 5–9, following Proven Winners' cultivar-specific guidance.
-
Mature size: Approximately 10–16 feet tall and 4–5 feet wide, depending on conditions and care.
-
Placement: Allow room for the full width beside paths, entrances, walls, and other plants. Narrow does not mean miniature.
-
Seasonal habit: Deciduous; winter leaf drop means it is not a year-round privacy screen.
Light, Soil & Water
-
Light: Full sun, ideally at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
-
Soil: Average, well-drained soil. Adaptable to clay where drainage is adequate; avoid persistently soggy roots.
-
Water: Monitor soil moisture and water as needed during establishment. Established plants have lower watering needs, but may still need supplemental water during extended drought.
-
Site protection: Avoid planting beneath roof edges where falling snow could damage the upright stems.
Available Nursery Sizes
Choose 1 Gallon or 3 Gallon. These labels describe offered nursery-container sizes, not mature dimensions or guaranteed delivery heights. Flowers at delivery depend on the season and plant development.
Flowering, Pruning & Container Care
Expect a summer-to-fall flowering season rather than a guarantee of uninterrupted blooms. Weather, sunlight, maturity, and care affect the timing and abundance of flowers.
Purple Pillar® blooms on new wood. Little to no pruning is normally needed; if shaping is desired, prune in early spring. Choose a site where the natural height fits rather than relying on frequent cutting to keep it small.
A large container can showcase its upright shape, but plan for a tall plant, adequate root space, drainage, and stability in wind. Containers need closer watering attention, periodic repotting, and winter root protection in colder climates. In-ground hardiness ratings do not guarantee survival in an exposed pot.
Choose Purple Pillar® Rose of Sharon for a sunny space where tall, narrow growth and purple summer flowers can make an impact.
