Frost Proof Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides 'Frost Proof') solves the biggest problem with gardenias: bud drop in late spring frosts. Traditional gardenias set their flower buds in fall and carry them through winter — a single late frost can destroy an entire season’s bloom before a single flower opens. Frost Proof was bred specifically to resist this, with buds that withstand late spring cold snaps that would devastate other varieties. The result is a gardenia that actually delivers on its promise: large, creamy white, intensely fragrant double flowers that open reliably every spring and summer, backed by dense, glossy dark-green evergreen foliage that looks beautiful year-round.
Plant in acidic, well-drained soil with good organic matter. Gardenias are among the most pH-sensitive shrubs — if leaves yellow between the veins (interveinal chlorosis), the soil is too alkaline; amend with sulfur or use an acidifying fertilizer. Water consistently and deeply; gardenias do not tolerate drought well and will drop buds if stressed. Fertilize in early spring and again after the first bloom flush with an acid-forming fertilizer (azalea/camellia formula). Avoid fertilizing after midsummer, which can stimulate tender growth vulnerable to frost damage. Prune lightly immediately after blooming to shape — pruning later removes next year’s buds.
