Fine Line® Buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula 'Ron Williams') solves one of the most common landscape challenges: how to add significant height and vertical structure in a space that simply doesn’t have room for a wide-spreading shrub. Its dramatically narrow, columnar habit — reaching 5–7 ft tall but only 2–3 ft wide — makes it one of the most space-efficient vertical accent plants available. Its foliage is equally distinctive: fine, feathery, fern-like leaves with a soft texture that is unlike any other commonly available shrub, creating a refined, airy appearance that pairs beautifully with bold-leaved perennials and flowering shrubs. It is exceptionally cold-hardy (to zone 2), adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, and requires virtually no maintenance once established. Unlike invasive common buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica), Fine Line® produces very little viable fruit, making it an ecologically responsible landscape choice.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with well-drained to moderately moist soil. Water consistently during the first growing season to establish roots; once established, Fine Line® is quite drought-tolerant. Fertilize lightly in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer. No regular pruning is needed to maintain the narrow columnar form — this is a naturally narrow plant, not one that requires shearing to stay in shape. Remove any dead or damaged branches in late winter. Fine Line® is one of the most truly low-maintenance shrubs available for cold climates.
